Ash Wednesday

February 13, 2013 is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a day of universal fast and abstinence. Fasting is required from ages 18-60, one full meal and abstinence is from age 14, refraining from eating meat.

Fasting is primarily the act of willingly abstaining from some or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time while Abstinence is a voluntary restraint from indulging in bodily activities that are widely experienced as giving pleasure. (Wikipedia)

Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Season of lent for Catholics. This is being observed by placing ashes on the foreheads, as a sign of mourning and repentance to God. Ash Wednesday normally takes place during the Mass or Service of worship.

The ashes used are from the palms from the previous years. This palms are being burned and mixed with holy water and blessed.

While placing ashes on the foreheads by a priest, minister or officiating layperson say's "Remember that thou art dust and to dust thou shall return" or "Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel".

Marking of an ashes remind's us of our sins and with this it's a way of remembering and regretting things we have done and asked forgiveness to Jesus Christ. Marking ashes in cross sign is also reminding us that through Jesus Christ who has nailed on the cross, we have gain forgiveness of our sins.
