Filipino's Traditional Native Food during All Saints Day

Ibos, Lihiya, Puto, Palutaw, Valenciana, Ginata-an

It's been a tradition to us Filipinos to cook or prepare something in our table in every occasion. We prepare special dishes during fiestas, Christmas and other special occasions.

Every All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day Filipinos tend to cook and prepare Native Filipino food in our homes to commemorate the occasions of All Saints Day. Most food that are being cooked and prepared are made from Glutinous Rice (locally called "Pilit" or "Malagkit").

Since when I was young (which until now I'm still young, hehe) we always prepare food that is something "Malagkit" (sticky) every All Saints Days. Why something sticky? I don't why?! but this has been a tradition to us many Filipino.

Glutinous rice is a type of short-grained Asian rice that is especially sticky when cooked. It is called glutinous in the sense of being glue-like or sticky and not in the sense of containing gluten. It is also known as sticky rice,  a rice variety that is much stickier and gooey when cooked than the ordinary rice that has become a staple food for many Asian countries.

A perfect main ingredient for making homemade sticky rice desserts either baked, fried, grilled and even boiled together with other mixed of ingredients all together. It is definitely a great alternative for pastry dessert as Oriental cuisine has its version of its own.

Here's some common native Filipino delicacies that are mostly prepared during All Saints Day.

  • Suman sa Ibos is also one great tasting rice cakes originated in the Philippines. It is a mixture of glutinous rice, mixed with salt and coconut milk then poured over young palm leaves locally called Ibos.
  • Suman sa Lihiya is made from soaked glutinous rice mixed with coconut milk, wrapped in banana leaves.
  • Puto (Rice Muffins) is another Philippines best steamed rice cake. Can be eaten alone or with butter. A savory dishes for breakfast.
  • Palitaw (Glutinous Rice Dumplings) is a small, flat Filipino rice cake coated with grated coconut, sugar and sesame seed. They are made from malagkit (sticky rice) washed, soaked, and then ground.
  • Arroz Valenciana is Philippines local version of a popular Spanish dish Paella.
  • Bitsu-Bitsu
  • Ginata-an is a taro and sweet potato dessert with added sago and more
  • Kalamayhati is a native delicacy basically made from a concoction of ground sticky rice, sugar and coconut milk.
  • Bayi-Bayi is a bite-sized rice or corn cakes flavored with coconut and wrapped in banana leaf or in a clear plastic.
  • Suman Latik is a delicacy made of glutinous rice (malagkit), steamed then topped with syrup made from freshly extracted coconut milk and sugar cane chunk.

All Saints Day in the Philippines

November 1, marks as the All Saints Day (Todos Los Santos or Undas or Araw ng mga Patay). Filipino people celebrate, remember and honor the dead joyously, still a respectful day for commemorating our ancestors and loved ones. The celebration continues through the next day, All Souls Day. The two days are traditional Catholic holidays set aside to commemorate all the saints and the souls of the dead.

Thousand of Filipino families are repainting and cleaning the grave at the cemeteries in preparation of the incoming All Saints Day. Cemeteries in the Philippines consist mostly of mausoleums and grave plots. Flowers and candles are being offered in the tomb.

Families return to their respective provinces to pay a visit and respects to  the tombs of their deceased loved ones. Most Filipino people visit different cemetery and each grave of their loved ones to offer flowers or to light a candle and prayers.

In most Catholic cemeteries, a liturgy mass is being held and each tomb is blessed with Holy Water. Prayers are offered in hopes for the dead. Families stay all day and some stay overnight in the cemetery with their family or relatives tombs, having a family reunion atmosphere. Eating, drinking (non alcoholic), playing card games, praying and telling stories our common family activities while spending the day at the cemetery.

Bringing of alcoholic drinks and weapons as well as gambling are not permitted in the cemetery.

All Saints Day is considered a very important holiday by many Filipino and normally given as a special holiday.

The Garden Cafe

This Mansion is owned by the Montinola's and now a days it is rented and turns into a school for Korean student at daytime, at late afternoon and on weekends it turns into a coffee shop, so called The Garden Café.

The Garden Cafe serves refreshing frappes, iced and hot coffee, smoothies, sandwiches, pasta and more. Workers here are very much accommodating.
We ordered Strawberry Smoothies, very refreshing in a hot afternoon. Php 85
Their Strawberry Smoothies tastes really good, the taste could really compete with other known Cafe.
Of course they have their own unique taste for their products.
Americano Php60
 Kiwi Smoothies Php85
Potato Chips

Its not just a coffee shop, they also have selection of books and magazine that can be read and internet station for free access.
The Garden Cafe was renovated from being an old house to a new cozy cafe. The interior looks good and classy. You can take the outside seat of the garden for a more refreshing and cool ambiance.
How's the taste Shundy? I know you loved it...

Sydney Tower and OZTrek

Towering above the city’s skyline, Sydney Tower’s Observation Deck is perfect for planning a day out around Sydney and understanding the intricate layout of this beautiful and cosmopolitan city. Sydney Tower provides a panoramic 360 degree view from the Sydney Harbour Bridge on the north, picturesque Blue Mountains to the west, historical Botany Bay on the south and to the east, the magnificent Pacific Ocean.

Here's some photo I took from Sydney Tower Observation Deck.
Sydney Skyline
St Mary's Cathedral, opposite is Hyde Park Sydney
Hyde Park is a large park in SydneyNew South WalesAustralia. Hyde Park is on the eastern side of the Sydney central business district. It is the southernmost of a chain of parkland that extends north to the shore of Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour). It is approximately rectangular in shape, being squared at the southern end and rounded at the northern end.
St Mary's Cathderal
The Metropolitan Cathedral of St Mary is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney and the seat of the Archbishop of SydneyCardinal George Pell. The cathedral is dedicated to "Mary, Help of Christians", Patron of Australia. St Mary’s holds the title and dignity of a minor basilica, bestowed upon it by Pope Pius XI in 1930. (Wikipedia)

OzTrek is a unique attraction on its own, and is fun for the entire family. You'll be seated in our motion theatres and will experience the special effects, the sensational surround sound and heart, stopping real motion seating as you face our six metre high 180-degree cinema screens. Taking pictures here are not allowed, so I don't have any photos to show here, sorry for that. :)
